HOW DO I SLEEP AFTER ORAL SURGERY?

Posted on 12/5/2022 by Evan
HOW DO I SLEEP AFTER ORAL SURGERY?After oral surgery, it is crucial to get enough sleep and rest. By doing so, you are allowing your body to heal so that you can go about your daily activities.

Sleeping after oral surgery can be uncomfortable. The following are 5 tips to ensure you get a good night's sleep.

Keep your Head Elevated

For the first 3 days after oral surgery, ensure you sleep with your head propped up. This reduces swelling as fluids are drained from the area of surgery. Chances of swelling and new bleeding are also minimal. You can also use a recliner if you have one.

Sleep on your Back

This is important, especially for those who have had their tooth extracted. Sleeping on your back can be a tall order. It is, however, important because it helps keep the materials used to control bleeding at the surgery site in place.

Use Extra Pillows

Place an additional pillow or two behind your back. This is to ensure that you do not slide off, as you will be properly supported. Those who are unable to sleep on their back can use a proper pillow and sleep on their side. The pillows will prevent the protective materials from shifting.

Avoid Sleeping on Slippery Surfaces

After oral surgery, you will be tempted to slump on your leather couch to relax and may feel lazy to get up and go to bed. Your chances of sliding and falling off are very high. These can further damage the already tender and sore surgery site.

Create a Suitable Sleeping Environment

The appearance of your bedroom can help alleviate the pain that comes after oral surgery. Ensure your room is darkly lit; you can have soothing background music. This will help to take your mind off the pain.

Conclusion

As seen above, how you sleep can greatly impact how you recover after oral surgery. Your sleeping position and atmosphere can speed up your recovery.
