Piercings Can Damage Your Teeth, Gums, or Overall Oral HealthEven though piercings are a form of expressing beauty and personality, oral piercings like those on the lip, tongue, and cheek can cause serious damage to your teeth, gums, and overall oral health. Therefore, it is very important to consider these complications before getting piercings or continuing to keep them. Read on for more details on how piercings can damage your teeth, gums, or overall oral health.

Pain and Swelling

Given that piercing involves puncturing through healthy tissue, the affected area can cause intense pain and swelling. As much as this pain might reduce after some time, it is hard for you to clean your mouth when it is still intense. You might go for a few days without thoroughly cleaning your mouth, something that leads to the accumulation of bacteria. As a result, you can suffer from oral conditions like tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities. In addition, the swelling caused by piercing can interfere with how you speak and eat.

One of the most common effects of piercings is oral infections. If you have a piercing on your tongue, it can swell and attract bacteria. Combined with a lack of thorough cleaning, bacteria will accumulate and spread to other areas. This increases the risk of several oral infections. Signs of such infections can be pain, swelling, redness, and a foul odor. If you don't come to our offices for immediate treatment, these oral infections can lead to serious dental issues.

Bad Breath

Given that piercings cover oral tissues, it is hard to brush such areas. Without thorough and frequent brushing, food debris and plaque will accumulate around the piercings and cause bad breath. This is why oral piercings are not good for your gum and teeth. The risk of developing such harmful infections is extremely high.
