What is Sleep Apnea?Sleep apnea is something that can affect anyone regardless of gender, race, or age. It is a potentially deadly disorder that affects patients as they sleep. In many instances, patients are unaware they have it. There are a variety of different treatment options available to treat it and alleviate the symptoms associated with it. Sleep apnea is defined as the disruption of breathing during the patient's normal sleep cycle. For some, it can be caused by a physical abnormality while for others it can be a mental issue involving the brain.

What Are the Different Types of Sleep Apnea?

The first type of sleep apnea is known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea and is caused by a physical obstruction. This interferes with the airway and can involve an odd tissue growth which can block the inflow or outflow of air. This is also known as OSA.

The second kind of sleep apnea involves the improper signaling of the brain to contract the muscles necessary to breathe. This is known as central sleep apnea or CSA. In some cases, patients can actually have both kinds which is known as complex sleep apnea syndrome or CSAS.

Sleep apnea is a serious health disorder which can wreak havoc on the body in a variety of ways. There are acute cases in which the patient wakes up with a start gasping for breath because their air supply was cut off for so long. Patients who suffer from sleep apnea never get a full restful sleep because they are constantly struggling for air. During the day they can feel cranky and unable to focus during work. If not treated, it can lead to more severe conditions such as respiratory problems and even heart problems. Morning headaches and chronic dry mouth can also accompany sleep apnea sufferers. The good news is there are different treatments available which can help which our professionals can discuss with you when you come to see us.
