Complications That Stem from Not Treating a Dental AbscessA dental abscess is painful enough – the last thing you need is a complication from it. If you suspect an abscess, you should be seen as soon as possible to get it treated. If you wait too long, you could end up in more pain, or worse yet, with an infection.

What Is a Dental Abscess?

A dental abscess is caused by a bacterial infection, creating a pocket of pus, near the root of a tooth. It is important to recognize the symptoms of a tooth abscess, which can be, a severe, throbbing toothache, a sudden unpleasant taste in your mouth if the abscess ruptures, swollen cheek, face, or lymph nodes, difficulty chewing, or even complications with swallowing or breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible. At our office, we can answer any questions you have about dental abscess and treat you accordingly.

Don't Ignore a Dental Abscess

As with most dental problems, treating an abscess sooner than later, is your best bet at avoiding greater pain, dental visits, and cost. An abscess left untreated could cause the infection to spread to your jaw, head, or neck. As a bacterial infection, it can even lead to sepsis, which can be life threatening. A dental abscess needs to be drained as soon as possible, by your dentist, to avoid the spread of infection.

Relief comes quickly once the abscess is properly drained, and the infection is treated. You can help in preventing an abscess by brushing properly, at least twice a day, with a toothpaste that contains fluoride, flossing twice a day, avoiding sugary foods, and visiting your dentist for regular checkups. Our office is here to answer all of your dental abscess questions, and to safely treat your dental abscess. Give us a call today!
