One of the biggest complaints among people with wisdom teeth is discomfort. This can come from overcrowding, gum infection, and tooth impaction. Wisdom teeth removal can prevent current and future discomfort.

If you’ve gone through the process of having braces, you have had to work hard to get your teeth straight. If wisdom teeth are allowed to fully grow in, they can disrupt this work. They can cause overcrowding and push teeth out of alignment. Your perfectly straight teeth may become crooked once more.

When wisdom teeth are first emerging, they often grow in at an angle, which can cause impacted teeth. An impacted tooth is a tooth that is not fully above the gums creating space between the tooth and gums. Why Wisdom Teeth Removal Can’t Wait?

If you have put off getting your wisdom teeth looked at because you aren’t in pain, you may be inadvertently causing yourself more discomfort in the long run.In general, the goal is to remove wisdom teeth between the ages of 17 to 25. This age range allows for enough tooth structure to be present to remove, but before the roots become long enough to be problematic. Wisdom teeth are frequently impacted, this may be because they have insufficient room or because they are turned out of alignment. During your consultation, we will take a closer look using digital x-rays of your mouth and jawbone to determine the placement and positioning of your wisdom teeth. At this time we can discuss if there is room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth to erupt, and discuss whether treatment is needed.

Types Of Impacted Teeth

When discussing impacted teeth, we generally categorize impaction as one of the following:

Soft Tissue Impaction

A soft tissue impaction is when there is insufficient room in your mouth to allow your gum tissue to retract, meaning the tooth is fully up from the gum tissue, this does not allow the adequate cleaning of the tooth and leaves room for bacteria to hide.

Partial Bony Impaction

A partial bony impaction is when there is just enough space for the wisdom tooth to erupt partially from the jaw. It can not be a functional tooth for the purpose of chewing. Patients typically experience discomfort while chewing and have difficulty cleaning the tooth, among other problems.

Complete Bony Impaction

When there is no room for the tooth to erupt, this is known as a complete bony impaction. Because it can’t move into place, the tooth remains embedded within your jawbone. In some cases, even if the tooth becomes partially visible, the extreme angle of the eruption necessitates the implementation of more sophisticated or involved surgical techniques.

Your Wisdom Extraction Procedure

Pre-Op Consultation

Your pre-op consultation will include examining the area, discussing your needs and creating a treatment plan. We will also discuss your medical history and any medications you are taking, to ensure that the patient is able to heal at a reasonable rate. As with any surgery, infection is a concern, we will want to limit the possibility of infection developing as best we can. A treatment plan helps us complete our work efficiently. Typically, the extraction of all four wisdom teeth takes around one hour once the patient is comfortable.

The Day of Your Wisdom Teeth Procedure

The extraction of wisdom teeth is one of our most common and routine procedures performed by our team, and almost always an outpatient procedure. Before beginning, we will go over your anesthesia options. As licensed oral and maxillofacial surgeons, our doctors also specialize in anesthesia to ensure patients’ comfort throughout their procedure. We can help you feel comfortable.

Anesthesia Options

Typically, most procedures are performed under general anesthesia, but this is always discussed prior to treatment. Some patients prefer a conscious sedative, which we can discuss. We can help each patient make the best choice for the individual patient. Your safety and comfort are our first priority. In addition to larger pain relief, we will also apply localized pain medication to the extraction site to protect you from any additional pain that might arise during or after your procedure.

Post-Op Care

Following the removal of your wisdom teeth, we will release you to the companion you brought along. You will not be able to drive yourself home. We will provide post-surgery care instructions and a prescription for pain relief medication for the next couple of days. Recovering from wisdom teeth removal is often uncomfortable, most patients find that they can not return to regular work or school activities for a couple of days. We will advise you to rest and allow your body to heal. Please review and follow the post-surgery care instructions carefully.
