Oral Pathology
Oral pathology is also known as maxillofacial pathology or oral maxillofacial pathology. It is a pretty broad term. It goes beyond basic cleanings and filling cavities. Oral pathology deals with finding diseases and conditions that can affect the teeth, jaw, mouth, and face. Here at Nevada Oral & Facial Surgery, we want to do whatever we can to make sure that your mouth is healthy, and that you have a beautiful smile. That is what oral pathology is all about.
What You Need To Know About Oral Pathology
One of the most common procedures that fall under the category of oral pathology is wisdom tooth extraction. Often wisdom teeth need to be removed because they crowd the other teeth in the jaw. This can lead to pain and also bite problems. Another reason why wisdom teeth are extracted is that they are not coming in correctly. If there is a problem with all four teeth, we will extract them all at the same time. This will cut down on the overall healing time.
Another common oral pathology procedure is one or more dental implants. A dental implant will replace a missing tooth. The procedure could start with a bone graft because there needs to be enough bone in the jaw for the implant to set. After the bone graft (if needed) we will implant a screw in your jaw. This will become the new root of the tooth. Once the screw has become part of your jaw, we will place a crown on the screw, and it will become a new permanent tooth.
If you need a biopsy, this will most likely be performed by an oral pathologist. A biopsy is often used to check for cancer, but that might not be the only reason why a biopsy is needed. If you have a traumatic injury to your teeth or your jaw, you might need to see an oral pathologist. If surgery is going to be needed after a trauma, you will want to know that it is being performed by the right person.
An oral pathologist can also treat tumors and cysts. He or she could also treat melanoma and skin cancer. Some patients will also see an oral pathologist to reverse the effects of aging or for another cosmetic procedure. An oral pathologist can change the shape of the jaw, provide laser treatments, and even apply Botox. There are other cosmetic procedures that people will see an oral pathologist for.
These are just a few of the many things that you might see an oral pathologist for. The specialty requires extra schooling and also a residency. It is a specialty that we are proud of here at Nevada Oral & Facial Surgery.
