After Implant Placement
Las Vegas, NV
Dental implants can do more than just replace teeth that have been lost. They can restore your smile and your confidence as well. From start to finish, dental implants can take several weeks or maybe even months to be complete. Here at Nevada Oral & Facial Surgery, we will tell you what you need to do and what to watch for after the implant placement, but here is a quick rundown of what you can expect.
What You Need To Know For After The Placement Of A Dental Implant
You will want to take good care of your mouth and your implant while you heal. Here is some information that you should find helpful. Remember that this is a guideline, and your situation may be different.
The first day you need to be careful. If you smoke, this is a good time to stop. You should still brush your teeth the first night but stay away from the area. Do your best not to disturb it. You will also want to take the day off and spend it resting.
If you have pain, an ice pack on the area might help. We will talk to you about pain relievers before your surgery. If we prescribe an antibiotic, make sure that you take the entire bottle.
About 24 hours after your surgery, you can most likely start a salt water rinse. Mix one tablespoon of salt with one cup of warm, not hot, water. Rinse the area with the mixture, but do not swallow. You should rinse three times a day, after eating.
When sleeping, do not lie flat on your back, and do not sleep on your side for several nights. Elevate your head with extra pillows. Exercise should be avoided during the first few days after you receive the implants as well.
You will want to stick to soft foods for a while. Do not use a straw the first couple of days, and avoid foods that are too hot. You might also want to avoid foods such as rice or sunflower seeds that could get lodged in the surgical area.
For the first few days after your surgery, you may have a sore throat, stiff jaw muscles, nausea, or dry lips. These things can be normal, but if they last more than a few days or are unbearable, contact our office immediately. You could also get lightheaded for the first couple of days, so be careful when getting up. If possible, have someone stay with you for the first two or three days.
Caring For Your Implant Is Important
We will give you other instructions for care after your surgery. We will also schedule you’re first follow up appointment. We will want to keep an eye on your healing and let you know when you will be ready for your permanent crown or crowns.
