PLANMECA and the ALARA Principle (as low as reasonably achievable)

We utilize Planmeca’s advanced imaging technology (digital CT scanner) to provide the best care and results for our patients. Planmeca follows the very best clinical values with their commitment to the “as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) radiation” principle. This keeps the patient, oral surgeon, and other clinical professionals safe. This is possible through the intelligently designed and patented Selectively Compliant Articulated Robotic Arm technology built into its ProMax platform. This arm allows for precise imaging across the entire maxillofacial region and eliminates exposure to areas not needed for diagnosis.

What Are 3D X-rays?

3D CBCT X-rays are a safer and faster version of a regular CAT scans or CTs. A cone-shaped X-ray beam is used through rotation and produces cross-sectional images of facial bone and soft tissue with a variety of different resolutions. This advanced technique and technology offers very clear images of the most valuable details required for proper diagnosis, while at the same time limiting patient exposure to radiation. Our oral surgeons use this technology for a variety of diagnostics including:

  • Oral surgery
  • Implant planning
  • Orthodontic planning and implant anchorage
  • Cephalometric analysis
  • TMJ analysis
  • Airway study (sleep apnea)
  • Jaw tumors
  • Impacted teeth

How Often Should Radiographs Be Taken?

A patient’s unique characteristics such as current oral health, age, and risk for disease are primary determinants of how often X-rays should be taken. For example, children may require X-rays more often than adults. This is because their teeth and jaws are still developing. Their teeth are also more likely to be affected by tooth decay than those of adults. Our experts can answer these questions based on your current oral health and patient history, so please don’t hesitate to ask when you visit us for your next appointment.

“I was referred to Nevada Oral and Facial Surgery by my dentist when I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed. My experience was flawless from start to finish! Making an appointment was simple (which is a big deal when it comes to medical offices), and the ladies at the front desk were very helpful in getting my paperwork together.  The entire office staff is kind and friendly, and Dr. Johnson was fantastic! During my consultation, he went over my x-rays, explained the procedure, and gave me a full picture of what I could expect on procedure day.  I was even able to make a last-minute appointment post-procedure when I had some concerns.  Dr. Johnson was very understanding and addressed all of my concerns right away. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a great oral surgeon and hassle-free experience.”
